Contents

Our new Quaternary Care Hospital in CMC Vellore Ranipet Campus is now open. It was inaugurated by our Hon’able Chief Minister, Thiru M.K Stalin on 25th June 2022 through videoconferencing.

Ranipet New Hospital

The new hospital in the CMC Vellore Ranipet Campus opened in June 2022. CMC is building a new 1,500 bed hospital in Ranipet district, by Kannigapuram village. This is close to Vellore, on the main highway. This will help us to serve our patients better. It will help patients in both the new hospital and the main Vellore campus hospital. Initially, the new hospital in Ranipet will care for accident victims. There will also be some other medical specialities.

The main focus for the medical specialities will be on “lifestyle diseases”. These include cancer and heart disease. Later on, other specialities will be added.

For a long time, we have realised that there is an urgent need for a good trauma centre. This will be on the busy national highway between Chennai and Bengalaru. Below, you will find more on the care for accident victims that the trauma centre will provide. Plus details of the other patient services that will be available.

The Ranipet hospital will be a Quaternary hospital. It will offer specialist services initially focusing on lifestyle diseases. Quaternary means a hospital giving very specialist treatments.

The architects created digital 3D models. This helps us to see what it will all look like when finished. The new hospital is looking more and more like those pictures. See those images below.

Why a new Campus?

CMC Vellore grew from a one-bedded clinic to a sprawling healthcare institution. Now CMC has six campuses in and around Vellore. Every new campus was built to cater to an unmet need.

kannigapuram was started because the old CMC faciltites were crowded. But now Kannigapuram opens for CoVid patients.
Typical CMC outpatient area – PreCOVID.
Severe Crowding prompted the building of the new hospital at Kannigapuram.

By the early 21st century, it became clear that the main hospital campus was too congested. This made it difficult to provide optimal support to our patients. So, the hospital made the bold decision to build a new campus. (Read more).

Care for Accident Victims

The new hospital in the CMC Vellore Ranipet Campus will be a Trauma Care Centre. This will provide state-of-the-art facilities to save the lives of accident victims.

Read about the Trauma Care Centre at the new campus.

Victims of all kinds of accidents and “mass casualties” will come to the hospital. Mass casualties tend to come from large accidents when lots of people are injured. This will include traffic accidents, falls, work accidents, accidents in the home etc. CMC Vellore will look after these victims in the new trauma centre in Ranipet. This is the first of its kind in the State.

Other services at Ranipet

In the longer term, the new facility will meet several huge needs. The new Trauma Centre will care for accident victims. The rest of the hospital will be about lifestyle or non-infectious diseases. These are also called non-communicable diseases. They include cancer and heart disease. Strangely, the hospital first looked after patients with the infectious COVID-19 disease.

Care for Cancer, Healing for Hearts.

Lifestyle diseases include cancer and heart disease. These are rapidly taking over from infectious conditions, like TB and malaria. So now cancer and heart disease are major causes of illness and death in India.

CMC will provide:

  • Highly skilled staff to look after our patients. Plus,
  • Top-level diagnostic and therapeutic equipment. This will do any tests that patients need.

Together they will give the very best care in a compassionate environment.

Specialist departments will move most of their work to the new hospital. This includes Neurosciences, Urology* and Gastroenterology***. The new hospital will give them much-needed space to expand. Patients will benefit from a much more pleasant and less crowded environment. Outpatient services will be available for other specialities. This move will reduce the number of patients and staff in the Vellore Town Campus.

*Neurosciences – brain and nerves,
**Urology – waterworks, bladder, kidney surgery etc.
***Gastroenterology – stomach, bowel and gut.

Please give generously to help us realise this dream.

Towards the Finish Line.

Work continues on the rest of the new hospital in the CMC Vellore Ranipet Campus. The lockdown caused serious delays. So, we need your help more than ever to complete this huge project. The hospital will have over 1,500 beds. it will also have operating theatres and diagnostic facilities****.

****Diagnostic facilities are for tests and investigations.

We still need your help

We opened beds to care for COVID patients when this was needed [now closed]. However, we still need to complete the rest of the new 1500-bed campus. Thanks to our staff and supporters, the finish line is in sight.

Please give generously to help us realise this dream!

Naming Opportunities.

If you give over ₹10,000/- your name will go on our Donor Wall. You can still have your name, or your company’s name, on equipment, rooms etc. Do contact us if you are interested at the development office: dev.office@cmcvellore.ac.in.

Fighting the Pandemic

The new hospital in Ranipet was not finished when the pandemic struck. But hospital staff and the builders got some areas ready to use. Here are some details on how the new hospital was used during the COVID pandemic.

Kannigapuram opened for COVID patients in 2020 and 2021. Triage area at the Ranipet, near Kannigapuram, CoVid Care Centre.
Triage station inside the Kannigapuram COVID Health Centre, September 2020.

Phase 1: Open as COVID-19 Health Centre.

Kannigapuram opened for COVID patients in June 2020. The lower floors of the In-Patient Block of the new hospital were opened as a COVID Health Centre. The dedication ceremony took place on June 17th 2020. And we were honoured to have the collector of Ranipet as the chief guest. An earlier inauguration of the whole hospital took place on 27th May, 2020. Unfortunately, only a few could attend due to the lockdown.

CMC commissioned 168 beds, in isolation wards, for COVID patients in the first wave. CMC trained staff in COVID care and posted them to these new wards.

Photos of Phase 1, June 2020

Initially, the new hospital looked after COVID inpatients. But only patients with mild to moderate symptoms. The ground floor had a reception and a triage area. This was for screening patients on arrival. There were 2 wings of 56 beds on the second floor. Plus another 56 beds on the third floor, so a total of 168 beds. In the first wave in 2020, there were no ICU beds.

A laboratory equipped with diagnostic equipment was available. An oxygen concentrator plant was already in place. This ensured that there was adequate oxygen available for the patients. Such oxygen treatment is vital for treating COVID patients.

Phase 2: COVID Health Centre plus ICU.

Beds were again prepared at Kannigapuram in Phase 2. These were needed as the numbers of COVID-19 cases rose. Too many patients for the hospital in the Vellore city centre. This was for the Delta variant spike in May 2021. The Ranipet new hospital had:

  • 168 beds for isolation and treatment on the 4th and 5th floors.
  • 24 intensive care beds with
    • oxygen for all, and
    • ventilators for most.
  • Outpatient facilities.

You can see some amazing photographs showing this. The photos show the patients being moved between the 2 ICUs. From the ICU in the main hospital in Vellore to the ICU in the new hospital in Kannigapuram, Ranipet. See the photos here: Photos of the ICU move.

To move one patient from CMC in Vellore town to CMC Ranipet takes a lot of planning. And a lot of people. The patient and all the equipment are moved safely onto the ambulance stretcher.

THANK YOU

A HUGE thank you to everyone who helped us treat so many people during the COVID pandemic. This includes our amazing hospital staff, the builders and, of course, our supporters. Thank you.
